Date: March 2, 2026
Each March, healthcare organizations across the country recognize National Nutrition Month, an initiative that encourages informed food choices, regular physical activity and the development of sustainable healthy habits. Established in 1973 as a week-long observance and expanded to a full month in 1980, National Nutrition Month highlights the critical role nutrition plays in overall well-being. In inpatient rehabilitation, nutrition is especially important because it directly supports healing, strength recovery and functional progress. Patients rely on proper nourishment to rebuild endurance, manage medical conditions and maximize the benefits of therapy. Nutrition is not separate from recovery – it is an essential part of the rehabilitation journey.
March also includes Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, observed this year on March 11, 2026. Created in 2008, this day recognizes the dedication of RDNs, widely regarded as food and nutrition experts. These professionals serve in hospitals, clinics and community settings where they translate evidence-based nutrition science into practical care. In our Encompass Health inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, their expertise supports individualized recovery plans that align with each patient’s medical and functional goals.
At Encompass Health, nutrition care is delivered by a team that includes registered dietitians, nutrition services aides and nutrition supervisors. Together, these professionals help ensure patients receive high-quality nutrition support throughout their rehabilitation stay. Their work extends beyond meal service. It is integrated into the broader interdisciplinary approach that defines inpatient rehabilitation.
Dietitians at Encompass Health play a central role in promoting health and wellness through personalized nutrition planning. They assess each patient’s nutritional status, develop and implement individualized dietary strategies and provide education that supports both inpatient recovery and post-discharge success. Dietitians also monitor progress and collaborate closely with clinical teams to align nutrition care with therapy goals. This work requires both clinical expertise and a strong commitment to patient-centered care. For professionals passionate about improving lives through nutrition, the role offers meaningful opportunities to support recovery in a collaborative healthcare environment!
The impact of this work is best understood through the voices of the team members who live it every day.
