How to overcome interview nerves

How to overcome interview nerves

Feeling nervous before an interview is completely normal. Even the most experienced professionals feel some level of anxiety when preparing to talk about their skills, experiences and goals. The good news is that nerves are not a sign you are unprepared or unqualified. They simply mean you care about the opportunity.

At Encompass Health, we want candidates to feel confident and informed throughout the interview process! Understanding what to expect and how to prepare can turn nervous energy into focus and clarity. With the right mindset and preparation, interviews can become less intimidating and more like meaningful conversations about your future.

Understand the interview process

One of the biggest sources of anxiety is uncertainty. Knowing what the process looks like ahead of time helps you feel more in control.

At Encompass Health, the interview process typically begins with a phone screen. This initial conversation is an opportunity to discuss your background, interests and alignment with the role. It is also a chance for you to ask early questions about the position or team.

If selected to move forward, candidates are usually invited to a virtual interview. This stage allows hiring leaders to learn more about your experience and professional goals. It is less about perfect answers and more about understanding how you think, collaborate and approach your work. When you understand that interviews are structured conversations rather than interrogations, it becomes easier to show up as yourself and more confident!

How to effectively prepare

Preparation is one of the most effective ways to reduce interview anxiety. Instead of trying to memorize scripts, focus on organizing your thoughts and experiences.

Start by reviewing the job description and identifying where your skills align. Think through real examples that demonstrate teamwork, problem solving and adaptability – all core skills needed in inpatient rehabilitation.  These examples particularly help recruiters understand how you approach challenges and contribute to a team.

It is also helpful to research Encompass Health’s values and care philosophy. Familiarity with our focus on rehabilitation, collaboration and patient-centered care allows you to speak more naturally about why the role interests you.

Practice answering common questions out loud. This helps you become more comfortable articulating your thoughts and reduces the pressure of thinking on the spot. You do not need rehearsed answers. You want clarity and confidence.

Reframe the interview as a two-way conversation

Many candidates feel pressure because they believe they are being evaluated at every moment. While interviews do assess qualifications, they are also designed to help you determine whether the role and organization are the right fit for you as well.

Think of the conversation as a partnership discussion. You are learning about the team culture, expectations and growth opportunities while interviewers are simultaneously learning about you. Asking thoughtful questions demonstrates engagement and curiosity, not insecurity.

Manage nerves in the moment

Even with preparation, nerves can still show up. The key is learning how to manage them without letting them take over.

Before your interview, give yourself time to settle in. Take a few slow breaths and remind yourself that you have earned the opportunity to be there. During the conversation, pause briefly if you need time to think. Thoughtful responses are more valuable than rushed ones. For virtual interviews, test your technology in advance and choose a quiet, comfortable space. Reducing logistical stress helps you focus on the conversation itself.

If you stumble over a word or lose your train of thought, it is okay. Interviewers understand that candidates are human. Simply take a breath and continue. At Encompass Health, we value candidates who are thoughtful, collaborative and motivated to grow. Your interview is an opportunity to showcase not only your qualifications but also your commitment to meaningful work. Explore our career opportunities on our careers website here!
