Resume etiquette 101: Tips from our recruiters to help you stand out

When it comes to landing your next role in healthcare, your resume is often the first impression you make. At Encompass Health, our recruiters review hundreds of resumes every week, and they know what makes an application rise to the top. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, following a few proven resume etiquette tips can help you showcase your skills, experienceand passion for patient care in the best light possible.

  1. Highlight results, not just responsibilities
Healthcare is about impact—and your resume should reflect that. Instead of simply listing tasks, emphasize a results-oriented approach. Showcase measurable outcomes, such as improved patient satisfaction scores, reduced readmission rates, or efficiency improvements in your unit. For example, “Implemented a new medication tracking system that reduced errors by 15%” shows both your initiative and results.
  2. Spotlight your clinical skills and certifications
In a competitive field, credentials matter. Include a dedicated section near the top of your resume for licenses and certifications, complete with issuing bodies and expiration dates. This is especially important for therapists and specialized roles— with credentials like CCC-SLP, RN, PT or OT immediately tell recruiters that you’re qualified and ready to step in.
  3. Keep It clear and concise
While it may be tempting to include every detail of your career, recruiters recommend keeping your resume clean and easy to read. Stick to 1–2 pages, use clear section headers and choose a professional font. Bullet points make your experience easier to scan quickly, which is essential when hiring managers are reviewing many applications at once.
  4. Tailor your resume to the role
No two healthcare jobs are alike, and your resume shouldn’t be either. Align your experience with the job description by pulling out the skills and experiences most relevant to the role. For example, if you’re applying for a rehab nursing position, emphasize experience with interdisciplinary teamwork and patient rehabilitation outcomes.
  5. Don’t forget the human side
In healthcare, compassion and collaboration are just as valuable as technical skills. Use your resume to highlight examples of teamwork, patient-centered care or leadership experiences. These details help show you’re not only clinically skilled, but also a culture fit for organizations like Encompass Health.

By emphasizing measurable results, clearly listing licenses and certifications and tailoring your experience to the role, you’ll give recruiters and hiring managers a clear picture of what you bring to the table. At Encompass Health, we encourage all candidates to think of their resume as a reflection of their impact on patients and teams—because in the end, that’s what makes you stand out.
