4 Resume Tips for Healthcare Professionals to Help You Stand Out

Resumes will never go out of style, especially in the healthcare industry, where first impressions matter! Whether you’re fresh out of school or a seasoned professional, having a clean, well-crafted resume can make all the difference as you try to land your next job. Our Encompass Health recruiters review hundreds of applications daily and have gathered some top resume tips to help healthcare professionals like you stand out in the job market.

  1. Keep it strictly professional
Your resume should reflect your professional self. Avoid including personal details like hobbies and be sure your contact information is appropriate—this means retiring that email address you created in middle school! A professional tone sets the stage for how potential employers perceive you from the start. For students, consider applying to jobs with your personal email since you likely won’t have access to your student email address in the future.

  2. Tailor your resume to the role you’re interested in
One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is submitting the same resume for every role. Take time to tailor your resume for the position you’re applying for by highlighting relevant skills and accomplishments. For example, if you’re interested in a leadership position, emphasize specific examples that showcase your leadership abilities. Focus more on what you achieved in previous roles rather than just listing responsibilities. Listing all your licensures will help our recruiters evaluate and find the perfect fit.

  3. Keep the formatting clean and simple
While it might be tempting to use a flashy design that stands out, simple formatting is key and makes it easier for recruiters to read through. Stick with a clean, classic format in reverse chronological order (most recent experience first) to help our recruiters gain a better understanding of your most recent opportunities. Ideally, your resume should be one page—two pages max if you have 20+ years of experience. Make sure the content is relevant and current and avoid lengthy details about unrelated positions from long ago.

  4. Never forget to proofread!
Your resume is your real first impression, even before your phone interview! Be sure to check for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors before submitting. Having a polished, error-free resume shows attention to detail and professionalism.
