Leadership in healthcare requires more than operational knowledge. It requires resilience, strategic thinking, adaptability and a commitment to people. The Developing Future CEO (DFCEO) program was created to help aspiring leaders build those skills and prepare for long-term success.
The DFCEO program is designed for individuals who are ready to grow into executive leadership roles within Encompass Health hospitals. Through immersive learning experiences, mentorship and hands-on operational exposure, participants gain the tools and confidence needed to lead with purpose.
What makes the DFCEO program unique is its focus on real-world leadership development. Participants do not simply observe hospital operations. They become part of them. The program provides direct exposure to every aspect of hospital leadership while creating a strong support system along the way.
As Beth Tucker of South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital shared:
“As an associate administrator, I gained exposure and experience in every aspect of hospital operations through the curriculum and department rotations.”
The program combines structured learning with practical experience. Participants work closely with hospital CEOs and senior leadership teams who guide development throughout the journey. Mentorship is a major part of the experience and often becomes one of the most valuable aspects of the program.
Tucker also reflected on the impact of that support:
“The host CEO navigates and drives the curriculum teaching along the way, while their senior leadership team supports and helps you learn technical skills. You also have a coach that assists with professional presence and growth.”
For many future leaders, growth begins outside of their comfort zone. The DFCEO program encourages participants to challenge themselves and expand the way they think about leadership.
Ladessa Forrest described the experience as transformative:
“The Developing Future CEO program was a pivotal step in my leadership journey. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me elevate how I think, lead and make decisions.”
She also emphasized the shift that happens when leaders begin thinking beyond day-to-day operations:
“What stood out the most was the shift from operational thinking to true enterprise leadership, understanding how to balance people, strategy and performance at a high level.”
The DFCEO program also recognizes that leadership growth often includes personal transitions. For participants relocating for new opportunities, support is built into the process to help make those changes smoother and less stressful.
Tucker shared her relocation experience:
“The benefits team made the relocation experience a breeze. Moving can be extremely nerve-wracking, but the coordination between Home Office and third-party vendors was seamless.”
The impact of the program continues long after completion. Graduates step into leadership roles with greater confidence, stronger decision-making abilities and a broader understanding of healthcare operations.
Katy Reed reflected on how the program prepared her for her current CEO role:
“The DFCEO program played a pivotal role in shaping my readiness for my current CEO position.”
She continued:
“Overall, the program equipped me with the mindset and tools needed to step into my role with confidence. Beyond technical skills, it emphasized growth, flexibility and forward-thinking, qualities that continue to guide me as I progress in my career.”
Through mentorship, operational experience and professional growth, participants are positioned for long-term success within Encompass Health.
For aspiring leaders who are ready to grow, challenge themselves and lead with confidence, the DFCEO program offers a path forward.
