Amarillo’s grid and the Interstate 40 and 27 interchange make crosstown drives short, and locals joke that everything is 15 minutes away. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport offers nonstop flights to Dallas, Houston, Denver and other hubs, and Interstate 40 runs east to Oklahoma City in about four hours.

Canyon country.
Palo Duro Canyon is the headline—hiking, mountain biking, camping and the Lighthouse Trail, all about 30 minutes from town. Closer in, Wildcat Bluff Nature Center and the city’s parks and trails give you prairie sunsets on a weeknight, and Lake Meredith, an hour north, is the place for boating and fishing.

Route 66 and beyond.
The Route 66 Historic District on Sixth Avenue mixes antique shops and live music with the road’s history, while Cadillac Ranch is the photo everyone takes. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, the Amarillo Museum of Art and the Don Harrington Discovery Center round out a museum scene worth a weekend of exploring on its own, and the Amarillo Symphony and Globe-News Center bring performances downtown.
